The best Ticino Wines

Ticino has always been the land of Merlot, so much so that it has become synonymous with Ticino wine, a single grape variety but an infinite number of stories! Nestled in the foothills of the Alps, but with a fantastic Mediterranean climate, the Merlot vine in Ticino has found a territory that is not too hot and humid enough, which the greats of viticulture in Ticino have managed to exploit in an excellent way.

Wine of Ticino area

80% of Ticino's grape varieties are dedicated to Merlot, but Ticino is not only Merlot: we can also find excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Gamaret, Bondola, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc. For over 2000 years this land has been linked to wine, but at the end of 1800 the native varieties of vines were exterminated by some diseases coming from the Americas, phylloxera in particular, and in 1906 the cantonal authorities introduced for the first time the Merlot vine, coming from the Bordeaux region.

Is produced thanks to over 1000 hectares of land cultivated by 3600 winegrowers, who have courageously managed to make even the steepest areas of the canton fruitful, leaving an indelible and characteristic trace on the Ticino territory. This is another reason why Ticino is inextricably linked to wine, a millenary history that blends knowledge, tradition and territory to create wines that are unique in Switzerland.

Territory and wines of Ticino

The territory of Canton Ticino is very particular and this is also reflected in its wines. The soils of southern Ticino are very clayey, rich and deep, thus making it possible to produce wines of great elegance and softness in the surroundings of Lugano, Chiasso and Mendrisio. Past Monte Ceneri we are faced with harder, sandy and silty soils. This territory, which also includes Locarno and Bellinzona, offers wines destined for ageing.
