Wine from Ticino area: be amazed by our selection

The Merlot grape varieties represent the great majority among those cultivated in Ticino (for a proportion of about 83%), this is also for historical reasons: after the arrival of the phylloxera of the vine from the Americas that destroyed the native European vines in the late nineteenth century, in fact, the Merlot proved to be one of the most resistant vines, and this led to its spread on a large scale.

Alongside the Ticino tradition of great Merlot, however, over the years have established great wines produced from other grapes: think for example of Vigna Noverasca Ticino D.O.C., the barricaded chardonnay of the Cantina Giubiasco (CAGI), or for lovers of red, CERUS, organic red wine barricaded I.G.T. of the Azienda Agricola Bianchi.

A key element of the tourist and leisure offer
Wine is a product that unites, and paradoxically it often performs this function even for those who do not drink it regularly. The deep bond with the territory, in fact, leads the wine production to represent a key point of the tourist offer and leisure activities of our Canton: think, for example, of the many theme trails that the Mendrisiotto offers to those who want to know the roots of viticulture and then delve into the vineyards and enjoy beautiful landscapes.

At the same time, events based on the theme of Ticino wine are present in our diaries on a regular basis: the Sagra del Borgo in the old town of Mendrisio, the Cantine Aperte (Open Cellars) and the local vintages are just a few examples, which nevertheless have a prominent place in the socio-cultural scenario of Ticino.

A project that combines wine, gastronomy and territory
Among the projects aimed at enhancing the value of Ticino wine, the “Casa del Vino Ticino” is particularly important: in the enchanting location of the ancient Ghitello mill, located in Morbio Inferiore at the gates of the “Gole della Breggia”, it is possible to taste the wines produced by forty-five Ticino producers. Sensory tastings, emotional tastings, theme evenings or lunches and dinners with food and wine pairings are just some of the proposals of the “Casa del Vino Ticino” .

Some of the wineries in this interesting project, as well as a selection of their best wines, are available in the “Ticinese Wines section” of our online wine shop.
